Profile
In the heart of the metropolitan region Nuremberg, roughly 425 young musicians are enrolled in performance, music education and academic courses at the Nuremberg University of Music (HfM). The historical main building was thoroughly renovated in 2018 and features state-of-the-art equipment. Tradition and modern age are united right at the Wöhrder See. This combination creates a perfect study environment.
Future-oriented, the university has an intense focus on the areas research and innovation: apart from an interdisciplinary professorship for research and human-animal studies, two further professorships for "artificial creativity and musical interaction" and "music education and artificial intelligence" were introduced as part of the Hightech Agenda Bavaria. These new areas conduct research on musical interaction with AI. They fundamentally contribute to the development of artificial creativity and have already acquired a nationally outstanding position in the research landscape.
The cooperations with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra and the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg, which have been maintained for many years, provide an opportunity for the university’s students to gain experience in a professional orchestra. Together with the Staatstheater Nürnberg, the university runs the cooperative Master’s degree programme "International Opera Studio". With roughly 350 events per academic year, the numerous ensembles, jazz combos, the Symphony Orchestra as well as the university choirs regularly enrich cultural life in the metropolitan region Nuremberg.
A further key focus of the HfM Nuremberg lies on digital teaching: A programme funded by the "Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre" (Foundation Innovation in Higher Education) focusses on further developing higher education didactics – towards more student-centeredness and the establishment of sound digital teaching and learning formats.
As the 7th sponsoring university of the Bavarian Center for Sustainability in Higher Education, the university actively supports sustainable development and works intensively on improving general conditions for climate protection in research, teaching, operation, student commitment and transfer.
In 2023, the Nuremberg University of Music successfully and without any conditions went through system accreditation and has thus demonstrated that its range of studies and research areas meets maximum quality standards. In the same year, the university was also certified as a family-friendly university. The certificate is regarded as a quality seal for systematic university politics of compatibility and has a duration of three years. The audit was carried out by the berufundfamilie Service GmbH.
